What is artificial intelligence (AI)?

Artificial intelligence refers to computer systems that model themselves on human-based functions through machines, processors and software with the aim of performing data processing and analysis tasks .

In simple terms, these are machines designed to reason, learn, perform actions, and solve problems. AI integrates a programming design that is capable of storing information about a certain area to convert it into knowledge and implement it in everyday human activity.

AI ranges from software such as virtual assistants, search engines, or voice and facial recognition systems to embedded systems such as robots, drones, and autonomous vehicles.

What are the types of artificial intelligence?

  • Reactive machines: a simple model that seeks to reproduce human behavior through actions that react to boost. Its role is to respond, not to learn.
  • Limited memory: These are also reactive machines, but with some memory, which allows them to learn data and make small decisions. This type of AI is applied to facial recognition systems and chatbots , for example.
  • Theory of mind: This is one of the most innovative AI models, as it seeks to better understand interactions such as emotions, needs and reflections specific to humans. It is worth more research, and it is a future projection.
  • Self-awareness: Although it is only a concept and there are no concrete creations of this type of AI, self-awareness suggests that machines, beyond replicating human behavior, could be capable of thinking and acting autonomously, being aware of themselves.

What is artificial intelligence for?

Artificial intelligence has been used in a variety of fields, including robotics, computer science, finance, healthcare, self-driving transport systems, video games and communications. In these environments, machines are capable of handling large amounts of data, allowing them to identify and understand verbal commands and images, and perform complex calculations and actions very quickly

These systems are therefore used to perceive and interact with their environment, as well as to act with a specific objective after a very complete collection and processing of data. In other words, it is applied technology for solving tasks on the market.

Some examples of how artificial intelligence is applied in different sectors:

  • Personal: assistance via smartphones, tablets and computers.
  • IT: cybersecurity guarantees and alerts.
  • Productive: assembly and automation in factories and laboratories
  • Financial: fraud detection and financial analyst.
  • Climate: reducing deforestation and energy consumption.
  • Health: identification of genetic factors that anticipate the detection of diseases.
  • Transportation: manufacturing of autonomous and intelligent vehicles.
  • Agricultural: anticipation of environmental impact and improvement of agricultural performance.
  • Commercial: sales forecast and chatbot sales.

Curious facts about artificial intelligence

According to a study carried out by the European Parliament:

  • In North America, more than €18 billion has been invested in AI, in Asia more than €9 billion, and in Europe more than €3 billion.
  • In the last decade, there has been a 400% increase in patent applications for the implementation of artificial intelligence.
  • By 2025, 60 million new jobs could be created as a result of the development of AI and robotics.
  • In April 2021, a proposal was put forward to make Europe the world center for the development of trustworthy artificial intelligence.
